AFEA NEWS: [CFP – extension] Fantasies of France: Exploring Transatlantic Misunderstandings from the 18th-Century to the Present Days

The LARCA (Laboratoire de recherches sur les cultures anglophones, UMR CNRS 8225, Université Paris Cité) is very pleased to invite doctoral students and early career researchers studying North American literature, Francophone literature, and comparative literature to take part in a one-day symposium dedicated to the exploration of transatlantic misunderstandings from the 18th century up to the present days. This one-day event hopes to foster discussions regarding the French fantasies of North American authors and, conversely, the North American fantasies of their French receptors and intermediaries, as well as the misunderstandings these fantasies sometimes entail. The main lines of investigations suggested to the participants include a) that of literary criticism, with a focus on the emergence of a ‘fantasy of France’ in the works of North American authors; b) that of the French reception of these same writers; and c) that of translation.

Professor Laurence Cossu-Beaumont (Université Sorbonne Nouvelle), author of the freshly off-the-press Deux agents littéraires dans le siècle américain. William et Jenny Bradley, passeurs culturels transatlantiques (ENS Éditions), will give a keynote conference on the occasion.

The symposium will be held at Université Paris Cité on the 19th of January, 2024. The deadline for submissions has been extended to the 31st of October, 2023.
