While some are obvious, such as the systemic discrimination that persists against Aboriginal people, others are less so, and stem, for example, from the difficulties in exposing and coming to terms with the memory of past crimes (Madley) or the estrangement between the various actors in play, caused by colonialism. Sometimes, it is still a matter of a “patent” lack of knowledge (Bousquet). In light of these observations, this conference aims to seek to identify the lingering legacy of colonialism, neo-colonialism, coloniality (Escobar), the impasses of post-colonialism – all essential concepts that will to be explored. In short, the objective is to study what still often stands in the way of a “fair and inclusive” relationship (Principles of Reconciliation, Truth and Reconciliation Commission) between indigenous and non-indigenous populations.

What then persists in terms of colonial practices, structurally or systemically in the historical narrative, public policies, collective memories and representations? What are the forces of transformation of these “current” colonial processes, active at the local, state or provincial, national, but also inter- and transnational levels? What are the voices which, in social, political, literary, philosophical and artistic movements, propose a reversal, a renewal of the relationship with the past, and the possibility of constructive otherness? How could this dynamic of decolonization be beneficial to indigenous populations, and facilitate a collaborative coexistence freed from the weight and shackles of the past?

This multidisciplinary symposium will attempt to answer some of these questions by exploring, among others, the following lines of inquiry:
ü the effects of colonialism and neo-colonialism on the current situation of indigenous peoples in North America, and on the relationships between indigenous peoples and others; a reflection on the notion of coloniality (Escobar);
ü the impact, on the current situation, of the (non) recognition and (non) memorialization of discriminatory and/or genocidal policies imposed upon the indigenous populations of North America, policies that are often simply omitted by the authorities (Dunbar-Ortiz);
ü the current state of reflections and discussions on the reparation of past crimes at multiple scales, between the local, the national and the transnational, between particular history and collective history (Bousquet).
ü the discussions pertaining to the notions of breaks and/or continuity, fixity (Bhabha) and progress, temporality and atemporality (Fabian), which would call into question the linear vision of the history of colonization, of relationships between natives and non-natives, action and inaction, the visible and the invisible, so-called “breaks” in colonial or post-colonial practices or even representations of native acts of resistance;
ü the notions of collaboration, co-creation and co-resistance in the struggle for decolonization and indigenization, but also cultural decentering and humility, the integration of indigenous knowledge and perspectives, as well as the inclusion of a holistic perspective and a relational approach in the relationship with the individual and the group;
ü the decolonization of epistemologies in order to deconstruct Western normative concepts, terminologies (“discovery”, “progress”, “universalism”) and the representation of otherness, in particular through the learning of indigenous languages, translation of indigenous works and the use of indigenous methodological and theoretical frameworks (Battiste);
ü to consider the “colonial structure” (Wolfe) as a whole, the links, networks, ramifications and interconnected spaces that hinder the process of decolonization;
ü the intimate link between territory and (de)colonization: the territory, the border, territorialization and deterritorialization (Rifkin);
ü the role of art, comedy, humour, literature in the process of intercultural interaction and co-creation (Wagamese, King, Menuentakuan Theatre).

Proposals for papers may be submitted in English or French.
