Artiste visuel avant tout, Ligon utilise l\u2019\u00e9criture comme mat\u00e9riau visuel : il commence en effet au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 1990 \u00e0 produire des tableaux qui transcrivent au pochoir sur la toile des citations d\u2019\u00e9crivains (afro-am\u00e9ricains pour l\u2019essentiel, mais pas seulement). Les citations qui constituent la mati\u00e8re du tableau nous invitent \u00e0 un travail de d\u00e9chiffrage, les lettres se brouillant du fait de la superposition de textes ou de traces noires sur la toile blanche.<br \/>\nL\u2019artiste s\u2019empare ici de la litt\u00e9rature comme d\u2019un mat\u00e9riau visuel, travaillant dans une filiation revendiqu\u00e9e avec le travail visuel de Jasper Johns, et dans le sillage de ce que fit la g\u00e9n\u00e9ration pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente d\u2019artistes conceptuels tels que Carl Andre ou Robert Smithson par exemple, mais \u00e0 cette diff\u00e9rence pr\u00e8s que le propos de l\u2019\u0153uvre se situe bien moins du c\u00f4t\u00e9 d\u2019une r\u00e9flexion formelle que d\u2019une invitation \u00e0 r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir \u00e0 notre rapport au lisible. Ligon engage ses spectateurs dans une r\u00e9flexion sur l\u2019acte d\u2019\u00e9criture mais peut-\u00eatre plus encore sur celui de la lecture et de l\u2019illisibilit\u00e9.
