The concept of \u201cPrehistory\u201d took shape as the life and earth sciences pushed the frontiers of the past back ever further, cordoning off a time before \u201chistory\u201d and encoding a narrative of civilizational progress from \u201cnature\u201d to \u201cculture.\u201d In the U.S., this narrative fulfilled a number of ideological functions, particularly when it came to colonial land expropriation. Yet it was also a way for the emerging transatlantic world to account for itself in ways that exceeded older biblical narratives about the origins of the world. This thematic issue will show that pictures played a crucial role in the consolidation of modern temporal concepts such as prehistory, and how this process unfolded via transatlantic networks.<\/p>\n<p>The deadline for submissions is May 29th. Contributions may be in French or English.<\/p>\n<p>Version fran\u00e7aise:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Appel \u00e0 contributions : Num\u00e9ro th\u00e9matique, \u00ab Repr\u00e9senter et m\u00e9diatiser la Pr\u00e9histoire dans l\u2019art et la culture visuelle am\u00e9ricains \u00bb (29 mai 2023)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Des contributions sont sollicit\u00e9es pour un num\u00e9ro th\u00e9matique explorant \u00e0 la fois ce que les \u00e9tudes visuelles et l&rsquo;histoire de l&rsquo;art peuvent apporter \u00e0 une litt\u00e9rature en expansion sur le concept de la pr\u00e9histoire, et ce qu&rsquo;une focalisation sur le \u00ab deep time \u00bb peut apporter \u00e0 notre compr\u00e9hension des fonctions et des histoires des images en Am\u00e9rique du Nord et dans le monde transatlantique au cours de la p\u00e9riode contemporaine. Le concept de la \u00ab pr\u00e9histoire \u00bb a pris forme lorsque les sciences de la vie et de la terre ont repouss\u00e9 toujours plus loin les fronti\u00e8res du pass\u00e9, d\u00e9limitant un temps avant l\u2019histoire et codant un r\u00e9cit de progr\u00e8s civilisationnel de la \u00ab nature \u00bb \u00e0 la \u00ab culture \u00bb. Aux \u00c9tats-Unis, ce r\u00e9cit a rempli un certain nombre de fonctions id\u00e9ologiques, notamment en ce qui concerne l&rsquo;expropriation des terres coloniales. Mais c&rsquo;\u00e9tait aussi un moyen pour le monde transatlantique \u00e9mergent de se justifier d&rsquo;une mani\u00e8re qui d\u00e9passait les r\u00e9cits bibliques plus anciens sur les origines du monde. Ce num\u00e9ro th\u00e9matique montrera que les images ont jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le crucial dans la consolidation des concepts temporels modernes tels que la pr\u00e9histoire, et comment ce processus s&rsquo;est d\u00e9roul\u00e9 via les r\u00e9seaux transatlantiques.<\/p>\n<p>La date limite de soumission des articles est le 29 mai, 2023.
