{"id":2084,"date":"2021-07-01T19:54:03","date_gmt":"2021-07-01T17:54:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afea.fr\/news\/?p=2084"},"modified":"2021-07-01T21:26:50","modified_gmt":"2021-07-01T19:26:50","slug":"jean-pierre-martin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/afea.fr\/news\/in-memoriam\/jean-pierre-martin\/2084\/","title":{"rendered":"Jean-Pierre Martin"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Jean-Pierre Martin\u00a0repose d\u00e9sormais au cimeti\u00e8re d\u2019Anville (Charente).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Jean-Pierre MARTIN\u00a0(1932-2013)\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sans Jean-Pierre MARTIN, les \u00e9tudes nord-am\u00e9ricaines en\u00a0France ne seraient pas tout \u00e0 fait ce qu\u2019elles sont\u00a0devenues aujourd\u2019hui.\u00a0Certes, quelques autres pionniers de sa trempe ont \u00e9galement \u0153uvr\u00e9 puissamment\u00a0pour la\u00a0reconnaissance de l\u2019histoire et de la civilisation des \u00c9tats-Unis dans\u00a0nos universit\u00e9s, mais il fut parmi les anglicistes l\u2019un des\u00a0premiers \u00e0 agir\u00a0concr\u00e8tement et efficacement en diverses instances pour imposer ce champ\u00a0disciplinaire dans les\u00a0d\u00e9partements d\u2019\u00e9tudes anglophones, longtemps domin\u00e9s par\u00a0la litt\u00e9rature britannique, et il fut peut-\u00eatre le seul de sa\u00a0g\u00e9n\u00e9ration \u00e0 le\u00a0choisir dans les ann\u00e9es soixante pour sa th\u00e8se de doctorat d\u2019\u00c9tat, somme\u00a0consacr\u00e9e \u00e0 Roger Williams[1].<br>Pendant plus de trente ans d\u2019une d\u00e9bordante activit\u00e9\u00a0scientifique, il n\u2019allait gu\u00e8re \u00eatre de pans de l\u2019histoire des \u00c9tats-Unis, ni\u00a0d\u2019aspects de leur culture politique, qui \u00e9chapp\u00e2t \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9rudition de l\u2019\u00e9minent\u00a0dix-septi\u00e8miste et dix-huiti\u00e8miste,\u00a0sp\u00e9cialiste incontest\u00e9 du puritanisme\u00a0am\u00e9ricain : \u00e9poque coloniale, Ind\u00e9pendance, P\u00e8res fondateurs et\u00a0Constitution,\u00a0esclavage, Sud\u00a0ante bellum\u00a0et \u201creconstruit\u201d\u00a0(ou\u00a0unreconstructed&#8230;), d\u00e9bats th\u00e9ologiques, th\u00e9orisation raciale, \u00e9glises,\u00a0ethnicit\u00e9, droit, politique, etc. Sa pr\u00e9cieuse vue globale de l\u2019histoire\u00a0am\u00e9ricaine, admirablement ancr\u00e9e dans une multitude de\u00a0lumineuses visions\u00a0sp\u00e9cifiques, son esprit critique impitoyablement constructif, son ironie\u00a0amicalement destructrice parce que\u00a0toujours accompagn\u00e9e d\u2019un humour\u00a0pacificateur, auront marqu\u00e9 quantit\u00e9 de th\u00e9sards et de coll\u00e8gues au cours de sa\u00a0longue\u00a0carri\u00e8re universitaire. Car la force de conviction de Jean-Pierre MARTIN\u00a0\u00e9tait difficilement r\u00e9sistible, de m\u00eame que le poids\u00a0de ses arguments,\u00a0immanquablement puis\u00e9s aux meilleures sources. Et comme si cela ne suffisait\u00a0pas, ce diable d\u2019homme\u00a0qui, dans tables rondes et discussions, avait souvent\u00a0l\u2019Histoire pour lui voulait, en fait,\u00a0toujours\u00a0avoir raison, bien\u00a0qu\u2019il sache\u00a0\u00e0 l\u2019occasion \u2014 mais \u00e0 regret, il faut bien l\u2019admettre \u2014 rendre\u00a0\u00e9l\u00e9gamment les armes ! Combien de pages de th\u00e8ses auront \u00e9t\u00e9\u00a0n\u00e9cessaires \u00e0\u00a0maints doctorants pour que le ma\u00eetre consente \u00e0 nuancer telle opinion tranch\u00e9e\u00a0qu\u2019il nourrissait \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard de\u00a0telle ou telle question&#8230; Mais \u00e0 peine sugg\u00e9r\u00e9e\u00a0une certaine propension au parti pris, il faut exon\u00e9rer l\u2019\u00e9ternel d\u00e9batteur de\u00a0tout dogmatisme et de tout sectarisme : le respect de la d\u00e9marche et des\u00a0opinions d\u2019autrui \u2014 pour peu qu\u2019elles soient\u00a0honn\u00eatement document\u00e9es \u2014 n\u2019\u00e9tait\u00a0pas la moindre des qualit\u00e9s de ce grand am\u00e9ricaniste.<br>Inlassable chasseur de poncifs et pourfendeur de mythes,\u00a0il n\u2019a eu de cesse de traquer le charlatanisme et\u00a0l\u2019approximation\u00a0journalistiques ou universitaires en vigueur chez maints sp\u00e9cialistes\u00a0auto-proclam\u00e9s de la chose am\u00e9ricaine\u00a0en France, le plus souvent en proie au \u201ccomplexe\u00a0de Tocqueville\u201d \u2014 cette \u201cabsolue n\u00e9cessit\u00e9\u201d ressentie par \u201ctout honn\u00eate\u00a0homme\u201d,\u00a0\u201cd\u00e8s qu\u2019il a foul\u00e9 le sol am\u00e9ricain\u201d, \u201cde donner du pays clefs d\u00e9finitives et\u00a0formule ultime\u201d[2]. Mais\u00a0l\u2019Am\u00e9rique\u00a0racont\u00e9e par certains Am\u00e9ricains ne le satisfaisait pas plus que\u00a0telles versions hexagonales. On peut rappeler la r\u00e9plique\u00a0d\u00e9vastatrice que\u00a0s\u2019attira voici presque trente ans tel auteur d\u00e9j\u00e0 tr\u00e8s m\u00e9diatique apr\u00e8s avoir\u00a0commis un petit condens\u00e9 de\u00a0\u201csornettes\u201d sur la \u201cr\u00e9volution\u201d reaganienne.\u00a0Jean-Pierre MARTIN, ironisant sur \u201cl\u2019attente na\u00efve, ou stupide, ou int\u00e9ress\u00e9e,\u00a0du\u00a0Messie am\u00e9ricain\u201d, concluait alors :<br><br>Deux\u00a0passions compl\u00e9mentaires animent ceux qui s\u2019assignent pour mission en France\u00a0d\u2019y montrer les\u00a0\u00c9tats-Unis : celle de voir dans tout moment de l\u2019histoire am\u00e9ricaine\u00a0une r\u00e9volution, celle d\u2019y discerner la\u00a0fid\u00e9lit\u00e9 quasi permanente \u00e0 une\u00a0tradition transcendante [&#8230;].\u00a0\u00a0Le\u00a0soleil aujourd\u2019hui, comme l\u2019annon\u00e7ait\u00a0Malachie, se l\u00e8ve \u00e0 l\u2019Ouest, et il n\u2019est\u00a0de lumi\u00e8re qu\u2019\u00e0 son ombre.[3]<br><br>Il donnait l\u00e0 le ton et la clef de nombre de ses\u00a0interventions orales ou \u00e9crites dans le d\u00e9bat scientifique. \u00c0\u00a0commencer par\u00a0l\u2019historiographie du puritanisme am\u00e9ricain, dont il d\u00e9plorera souvent parmi les\u00a0tendances celle (\u201cla plus\u00a0tenace, parce que la plus totalitaire\u201d) consistant \u201c\u00e0\u00a0identifier, par une sorte de m\u00e9tonymie historique, Puritanisme et \u00c9tats-Unis\u201d,\u00a0\u201ccet appel \u00e0 une hypoth\u00e9tique psychologie nationale qui est la tarte \u00e0 la\u00a0cr\u00e8me, le gagne-pain et l\u2019alibi des critiques,\u00a0chroniqueurs, humoristes \u2014 et\u00a0parfois, h\u00e9las, des universitaires\u201d[4].<br>Percutants rappels de v\u00e9rit\u00e9s historiques et\u00a0rafra\u00eechissantes \u2014 tout autant que r\u00e9jouissantes \u2014 mises au point\u00a0jalonnent les\u00a0articles et ouvrages de Jean-Pierre MARTIN dans un style inimitable tout de\u00a0s\u00e8che concision qui va droit \u00e0\u00a0l\u2019essentiel.<br>Quiconque voudra savourer un compendium du style, de\u00a0l\u2019humour et de la fulgurance de ses analyses pourra lire\u00a0un petit joyau,\u00a0La\u00a0vertu par la loi : la Prohibition aux \u00c9tats-Unis, 1920-1933[5], joyeuse\u00a0\u00e9tude de cas par un homme qui\u00a0n\u2019\u00e9tait pas ennemi des libations, r\u00e9v\u00e9latrice des\u00a0forces et des faiblesses de la R\u00e9publique am\u00e9ricaine, tout \u00e0 la fois rappel de\u00a0ses origines, de ses fondements, de ses d\u00e9rives et de ses promesses. Une belle\u00a0le\u00e7on d\u2019am\u00e9ricanisme, comme il en a tant\u00a0donn\u00e9.
