The State of the Art

Call for papers<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n The next annual conference of the French Association for American
\n Studies will take place in Lille from May 27 to May 29, 2005.
\n This conference has been planned without a specific theme to
\n allow for all specialists in American studieswhether in literature
\n or social sciences humanitiesto feel free to present their
\n current and innovative research.<\/p>\n

The conference organizers will create workshops
\n according to themes or disciplines, so as to allow participants
\n to share both their methodological and topical concerns. Though
\n the specificity of each discipline should be taken into account,
\n specialists of the same period, or who have an interdisciplinary
\n approach (film & history, literature & history), may
\n be grouped in the same workshop. Intertextual and interdisciplinary
\n methods are especially welcome.<\/p>\n

Some methodological concerns may be common to
\n all and can be debated in common:<\/p>\n

What is our position with regards to the American
\n specialists of our discipline or object? In other words: is there
\n a French, or European, specificity in our practice as researchers?<\/p>\n

What can we learn from American (or British)
\n approaches, such as the cultural studies approach and all its
\n variants?<\/p>\n

Are there certain critical debates that require
\n our urgent attention and a wider public diffusion by our members?
\n Do we have a common reaction to current critical turns in literature
\n or social sciences?<\/p>\n

We therefore invite specialists of textual studies,
\n visual studies and musical studies as well as those who specialize
\n in the social sciences (history, sociology, political science,
\n economy, communication, urban studies, etc.) to present their
\n research in what they deem to be the most provocative and cutting-edge
\n format.<\/p>\n

In short, we would like this conference to offer
\n as diverse and rich a picture of current research on the United
\n States as possible. We hope young researchers will present their
\n stimulating work and that more experienced ones will engage in
\n a similar process. In order to favor the greatest variety of
\n approaches, the conference organizers will propose a modular
\n structure, comprising workshops, roundtables, poster sessions,
\n video presentations as well as traditional papers and plenary
\n lectures.<\/p>\n

Please submit your proposal (300 words, or 2,000
\n signs) to the conference organizers before the October 1st, 2004
\n deadline. We will acknowledge receipt of proposals before we
\n make our final decisions and arrangements of sessions and participants.<\/p>\n
